Self-Guided Tour of Selimiye Mosque

You do not need a guide to appreciate Selimiye Mosque — but knowing what to look for transforms the experience from "beautiful building" to "understanding one of humanity's greatest architectural achievements."

1. Exterior Approach (5 minutes) Begin from Hukümet Caddesi to the north. From here you can see the full composition: the dome framed by four minarets. Notice how the minarets create a visual framework that makes the dome appear even larger than it is.

2. The Courtyard (10 minutes) Enter through the main portal on the north side. The courtyard arcade features ancient columns — look for Roman and Byzantine capitals recycled from earlier buildings. The central ablution fountain (sadirvan) has carved marble decoration worth examining closely.

3. Main Portal (2 minutes) The entrance from the courtyard into the mosque is framed with elaborate muqarnas (stalactite vaulting). Look up at the calligraphic inscription above the door.

4. First Impression (5 minutes) Step inside and stop. Let your eyes adjust. The first impression — the vast dome seeming to float above an ocean of light — is what Sinan designed for. Notice how the eight supporting pillars are positioned to minimize visual obstruction.

5. The Dome (5 minutes) Look directly upward. Follow the progression from the calligraphic medallion at the apex, through the painted decoration, to the windows in the dome drum that create the crown of light. Find the inverted tulip motif at the center.

6. The Mihrab Wall (10 minutes) Walk toward the qibla wall (south). The Iznik tilework here is the finest in the mosque. Look for the distinctive raised red pigment — this "Iznik red" was produced using a technique that was later lost.

7. The Minbar (3 minutes) The white marble pulpit to the right of the mihrab features geometric carvings of extraordinary precision. Note the muqarnas under the canopy.

8. The Sultan's Loge (5 minutes) In the southeast corner, elevated above the main floor. The tilework here is arguably even finer than around the mihrab, with unique color combinations.

9. The Muezzin's Platform (2 minutes) Positioned directly beneath the center of the dome — an unusual placement unique to Selimiye.

10. Exit and Exterior (5 minutes) Leave through the courtyard and walk around the exterior to appreciate the proportions from different angles. The southeast corner provides a classic view of dome and minarets together.
